Unix timestamp converter

See the current Unix time live, turn a timestamp into a date, turn a date into a timestamp, or convert a whole list at once.

Current Unix time

Dates without an offset are read in the selected time zone.

Timestamp to date

Date to timestamp

Batch converter

One timestamp or date per line. A timestamp becomes an ISO 8601 date, and a date such as 2024-05-01 13:00 becomes Unix seconds.

How to use it

  1. Read the current Unix time at the top, in seconds and in milliseconds, and click a copy button to take it.
  2. To convert a timestamp, paste it into "Unix timestamp". The unit is detected automatically.
  3. To convert a date, enter the "Date" and "Time" under "Date to timestamp" and read the Unix seconds and milliseconds.
  4. Pick a "Time zone" to read or enter times in that zone, or paste several lines into the batch converter.

What it does

  • Live current time

Unix seconds and milliseconds update as you watch, with a Pause button when you need to copy a steady value.

  • Automatic unit detection

Ten, thirteen, sixteen and nineteen-digit values are read as seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds. You can also set the unit by hand.

  • Many formats at once

The result shows UTC, your local time, ISO 8601, RFC 2822, relative time and the Unix seconds and milliseconds, each with a copy button.

  • Any time zone

Choose UTC, your own zone or a city's zone to read a timestamp or to say which zone a typed date belongs to.

  • Batch conversion

Paste one timestamp or date per line and get every result in one go, ready to copy back into a log or a spreadsheet.

Good to know

A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, a moment known as the epoch. Because it is a single number that does not depend on a time zone, it is widely used in databases, log files, APIs and programming languages. Many systems store milliseconds instead, which is the same count multiplied by one thousand.

Dates typed without an offset are read in the time zone you select, and daylight saving time is applied for that zone. A date with an explicit offset or a Z, such as 2024-05-01T00:00:00Z, is read exactly as written in the batch converter. Timestamps are shown for dates from year 1 to year 9999, the range that browsers can represent.

Questions and answers

What is a Unix timestamp?

It is the number of seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, not counting leap seconds.

How do I tell seconds from milliseconds?

A current timestamp has 10 digits in seconds and 13 in milliseconds. The converter uses the length and reads the value for you.

Does a Unix timestamp have a time zone?

No. It marks one instant that is the same everywhere. The time zone only matters when you display it as a clock time.

How do I convert a date to a timestamp?

Enter the date and time under "Date to timestamp" and choose the time zone the date is in. The Unix seconds and milliseconds appear below.

What is the Year 2038 problem?

Systems that store seconds in a signed 32-bit number run out on 19 January 2038. This tool uses larger numbers and keeps working past that date.

Is the timestamp sent to a server?

No. Every conversion runs in your browser.
