Remove the background from a photo
An AI model running in your browser finds the subject and clears away everything behind it. Keep the result transparent or give it a new background.
Add one or more photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more).
or drop files here
Works best when the subject stands out clearly. Hair, fur and see-through objects may need a touch-up with the Refine brush.
The image fills the whole background; its edges are trimmed if its shape is different.
A transparent background is saved as PNG.
Photo details such as EXIF data and location are not copied into the new image.
Files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Add one or more photos with "Choose files", or drop them onto the page.
- Click "Remove background". On first use, the AI model (about 45 MB) downloads once with a progress bar.
- Under "Background", keep "Transparent" or switch to "Color", "Blur" or "Image".
- If an edge needs work, open "Refine", paint with "Erase" or "Restore" and click "Apply".
- Choose a format under "Save as" and click "Download", or "Download all (ZIP)" for several photos.
What it does
AI that stays on your device
The open-source ISNet model runs inside your browser, so your photos are never sent anywhere. After the first download the browser keeps the model, and later visits start without waiting for it.
Four kinds of background
Leave it transparent, fill it with white, cream, pale blue or any other color, blur the original scene behind the subject, or place a second photo of your choice behind it.
Refine brush for tricky edges
Paint back a strand of hair or wipe away a leftover patch with the Erase and Restore brushes. Brush size, edge softness, zoom and undo make small fixes easy.
A whole set of photos
Add many product shots or portraits and they are processed one after another. The background you pick applies to every photo in the list.
PNG, JPG or WebP
A transparent result is always saved as PNG. With a color, blur or image background you can also choose JPG or WebP and set the quality.
Good to know
Background removal works best when the subject stands out clearly from its surroundings, such as a person in front of a wall or a product on a table. Hair, fur and see-through things like glass are the hardest parts. If the AI cuts them roughly, open Refine, zoom in, and use Restore to bring detail back or Erase to clean up stray spots. Hold the compare button to check against the original, and "Reset to AI result" takes you back to the starting point if a fix goes wrong.
Choose the output by where the picture is going. A transparent PNG drops onto slides, documents and designs without a box around it. Online shops often show products on plain white, so pick "Color" with the white swatch and save as JPG for a lighter file. Blur gives a portrait a soft, out-of-focus backdrop, and Image puts the subject in front of a different scene. Each saved file keeps the original name with -no-bg added, and camera details such as the location are not copied into it.
Questions and answers
How do I make the background of a picture transparent?
Add the photo, click "Remove background" and keep "Transparent" selected under "Background". The result is saved as a PNG, a format that can store transparency.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded into your browser and runs on your device, so the photos themselves never leave it.
Why does the first use take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads the AI model from this site, about 45 MB, and keeps it for later visits. After that, each photo takes anywhere from a few seconds to several tens of seconds, and phones are usually slower than computers.
The edges around hair look rough. What can I do?
Click "Refine", zoom in and paint along the edge with "Restore" to bring back detail, or with "Erase" to remove what should go. The [ and ] keys change the brush size, and holding Space lets you move around the picture.
Can I put a white background behind the subject?
Yes. Choose "Color" and tap the white swatch, or pick any color you like. With a color background you can save as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Which browsers can remove backgrounds?
The AI needs WebAssembly SIMD, which current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari support. On iPhone and iPad it needs iOS 16.4 or later, and older browsers show a message asking you to update.
