Options
How to use it
- Choose the "Country": United States or United Kingdom. For the UK, pick the "Region" as well: England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
- Pick a year with the "Year" buttons. They show last year, the featured year and the next one, and from October the coming year is the featured one.
- On the "Holidays" tab, read each holiday with its date and weekday. Click "Copy list" to copy it, or "Add to calendar (.ics)" to download a file for your phone or computer calendar.
- Open "Long weekends" to see how holidays and weekends can be joined with a few leave days, or "Working days" to count working days between two dates.
- Open "Options" if you want to count optional holidays as days off or treat Saturday as a working day.
What it does
US and UK in one place
Pick the United States for federal holidays, or the United Kingdom and a region for the bank holidays of England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Observed and substitute days
When a holiday falls on a weekend, the list also shows the weekday that is observed or given instead.
Next holiday
A line above the table names the next holiday and how many days are left, and past holidays are dimmed.
Checked against official lists
A note under the list says whether the year was checked against the official list, with the source linked, or calculated from the rules in force.
Calendar file and copy
"Add to calendar (.ics)" downloads a file for phone and computer calendars, and "Copy list" copies the holidays as text.
Planner and counter
The "Long weekends" tab suggests leave days and builds a leave plan, and the "Working days" tab counts working days and adds or subtracts them.
Good to know
The United States has 11 federal holidays under 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. (third Monday of January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Juneteenth (19 June), Independence Day, Labor Day (first Monday of September), Columbus Day (second Monday of October), Veterans Day (11 November), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) and Christmas Day. A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday on the Monday after, as the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sets out. In 2027 that gives Friday 18 June for Juneteenth, Monday 5 July for Independence Day, Friday 24 December for Christmas Day and, for New Year's Day 2028, Friday 31 December 2027.
UK bank holidays are set separately for each nation, as listed on gov.uk. England and Wales have 8 a year, Scotland has 9 (it adds 2 January and St Andrew's Day, has no Easter Monday and keeps its summer bank holiday on the first Monday of August) and Northern Ireland has 10 (it adds St Patrick's Day and the Battle of the Boyne). A bank holiday on a weekend gets a substitute weekday, so in 2027 Christmas Day (a Saturday) and Boxing Day (a Sunday) are replaced by Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Scotland also had a one-off World Cup bank holiday on Monday 15 June 2026.
Questions and answers
How do I know the list is correct?
A line under the list says whether that year's list was checked against the official one, with the source linked, or calculated from the rules in force. In the second case, holidays announced later are not included.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
In the US, a federal holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday and one on a Sunday on the Monday. In the UK, a bank holiday on a weekend gets a substitute weekday. Both appear in the list.
Do I get federal holidays off from my job?
Federal holidays apply to federal employees. Private employers are not required to give them, so check with yours. The day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve are shown as optional days, not statutory days off.
Why do UK holidays differ by region?
Each nation sets its own bank holidays, so choose England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland under "Region" before you read or copy the list.
What is not included?
Company holidays, school holidays and US state holidays are not covered, so add those by hand when you plan.
How do I add the holidays to my calendar?
On the "Holidays" tab, click "Add to calendar (.ics)" to download a file that phone and computer calendars can import. "Copy list" gives you the same holidays as text.
