Good to know
Photos are often the heaviest part of a web page. WebP, Google's image format for the web, typically stores a photo in a smaller file than JPG at similar quality, which helps pages load faster, especially on phones and slow connections. That makes JPG to WebP a common step before uploading images to a blog, an online shop or a portfolio.
Start with the "Quality" slider at its default of 90, and try lower values if you need smaller files, checking the result at full size. Keep the original JPGs: some older apps and services can't open WebP, so JPG remains the safer format for email or printing. The converter doesn't copy EXIF data or GPS location into the WebP files, which is usually what you want for images published online.
Questions and answers
Is WebP better than JPG?
For websites, WebP usually gives smaller files at similar quality. JPG is more widely supported, though, so it's the safer choice for email, printing and older software.
Will my photos lose quality?
WebP output is compressed according to the "Quality" setting you choose, so some detail is traded for size. Higher settings keep more detail; lower ones make smaller files.
Can I convert JPG to WebP in bulk?
Yes. Add a whole set of photos, convert them in one go and download them together as a ZIP.
