Random team generator

Paste your names, choose how many teams you want or how big each team should be, and get a fair random split in one click.

Mode
Split by

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the names under "Names (one per line, or separated by commas)". The page starts with a few example names, so replace them with your own.
  2. Under "Split by", choose "Number of teams" or "People per team", then enter the number.
  3. Click "Make teams". Each team appears as a card with its members and a head count.
  4. Click "Copy" to take the teams to a chat or document, "Full screen" to show them in a room, or "Copy share link" to send the name list. Click "Make teams" again for a fresh split.

Good to know

Random teams spare everyone the awkward moment of captains picking players one by one. Use them for classroom groups, sports practice, game nights, workshops and project work, anywhere the aim is a quick, fair mix. Names are shuffled with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, so each split is unbiased and cannot be predicted.

After the shuffle, names are dealt out one by one like cards, so team sizes differ by at most one person. Choosing the team size instead of the team count works the same way, with the number of teams worked out for you.

The tool sees only names, so it cannot balance skill levels or keep particular people together or apart. Your list stays on this device between visits, and the full Random name picker, which also draws winners, is one click away in the breadcrumb.

Questions and answers

How do I split 20 people into 4 teams?

Paste the 20 names, choose "Number of teams" under "Split by", enter 4 and click "Make teams". You get four teams of five.

What if the group does not divide evenly?

Team sizes then differ by at most one person. Eleven names in four teams give three teams of three and one of two.

Can I choose the team size instead of the number of teams?

Yes. Choose "People per team" under "Split by" and enter the size. The number of teams is rounded up, so ten people at 3 per team make four teams, two of 3 and two of 2.

Can I pick random winners instead?

Yes. Set "Mode" to "Pick winners", choose how many to draw and click "Pick".

Are the names uploaded anywhere?

No. The list stays in your browser on this device. "Copy share link" puts the names inside the link itself, so the same list can open on another device.
