How to use it

  1. Choose the "Country" and the year. For the UK, pick your "Region" too, because England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different bank holidays. This page opens on the "Long weekends" tab.
  2. Read each entry. It names the holiday or group of holidays, the days off you get without using leave, and the ways to join them to weekends with 1 to 5 leave days.
  3. Type how many days you have into "Leave days you have". Then tick a suggestion, or tap working days in the "Your year" calendar to mark your own leave.
  4. Read the plan line for the leave days used and every break they create. Click "Copy plan" to paste it into a message or calendar, or "Clear plan" to start over.

Good to know

Every suggestion gives at least two days off for each leave day you spend. In 2027, for example, England has Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, which is four days off in a row without any leave. Taking four leave days, Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April, stretches that to ten days in a row, from Friday 26 March to Sunday 4 April. In the US, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 25 November 2027, and one leave day on the Friday makes it a four-day break.

To build a plan, enter your allowance in "Leave days you have" (annual leave in the UK, vacation days in the US) and tick the suggestions you like, or tap working days in the 12-month calendar. The plan counts the leave days you have used, lists every break they make with its dates, and "Copy plan" puts it on your clipboard so you can send it to a partner, a team or a manager.

Only public holidays are known to the tool. Company holidays, school holidays and US state holidays are not included, and optional days such as Christmas Eve count only if you tick "Count optional and local holidays as days off" under "Options". In the US, a federal holiday may be a normal working day at a private company, so check which days your employer observes before you book. The full Public holidays tool, with the holiday list and the working days counter, is one click away in the breadcrumb.

Questions and answers

How do I turn a holiday into a longer break?

Look at the suggestions under the holiday. Each one lists the working days to take off and how many days in a row you then get, using 1 to 5 leave days, and each gives at least two days off per leave day.

Can I plan my leave for the whole year?

Yes. Tick suggestions or tap working days in the 12-month calendar to mark leave, and the plan keeps count against the allowance you entered.

Is my leave plan saved?

Yes, in this browser on this device only, so it is still there when you come back. "Copy plan" copies it as text, and "Clear plan" deletes it.

Do the UK nations have different long weekends?

Yes. England and Wales have 8 bank holidays a year, Scotland has 9 and Northern Ireland has 10, and the dates differ, so choose your "Region" first.

What if a holiday falls on a weekend?

In the US it is observed on the Friday before or the Monday after, and in the UK a substitute weekday is given. The suggestions count those days off as well.
